Assalamualaikum,
During the barbaric incident of Memali, I was still a toddler. A two years and 10 months old toddler who didn't know anything except nagging to my mom. I've never learn much about Memali until several years later when I started reading Harakah newspaper that my dad always brought home. Memali and Allahyarham Ustaz Ibrahim Libya were mentioned a lot of times in Harakah over the years. It feels like people are afraid that they will forget about one of the blackest days for this country, so that they have to mention it from time to time. And yes, we should never forget Memali and the conflict of principles it stands for.
In the last post, I put touched the issue of Palestine. Memali, is a scaled-down version of Palestine. Our own Palestine. Except that their land was not taken and the was no western support (maybe there is, who knows?) for the oppressors, what happened in Memali is a miniature replay of daily Palestine. They stand up against a mounting Goliath who wants nothing else but to capture or kill them.
Let us revisit this by putting pieces of Memali mentioned in other places:
"Tanggal 19 Nov 1985, Kg.
- Suara Anak Memali
"The Memali Massacre was a major incident that occurred in the remote village of Memali, Baling in the Malaysian state of Kedah on 19 November 1985."
- Viswiki
"The police action left 14 civilians and 4 policemen dead. The villagers were armed with a few hunting rifles and spears and other rudimentary weapons. The police used heavy vehicles. At the height of the assault, some villagers, men and women, came out in the open in a state of frenzy and hysteria. In an announcement in the media, Acting Prime Minister Musa Hitam (Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was away on a visit toChina), who was also Home Affairs Minister announced that 14 'criminals' had been killed in Kampung Memali in clashes with security forces."
- Wikipedia
- Laman Tinta Dakwah
"The people of Memali did not merely fight against plainclothes policemen or baton-wielding thugs, as is presently the case in Malaysia's reformasi protests. They confronted live bullets fired from M-16 rifles, and armoured vehicles deployed by prime minister Mahathir Mohamed, who is also the minister of home affairs. And for that, they paid with their lives."
- Muslimedia
"Memali is proof that the New Economic Policy doesn’t benefit the forgotten people of Malaysia. It is testimony that the politics of hatred, much more when the hatred is based on religious differences, would soon terminate in a colossal debacle. Memali is also about a government which had lost its plot, which had no idea how to deal with oppositions in a proper and democratic manner, in an area where it lacked clear ideals and plans. Never in the history of independent Malaysia has the might of physical power been so nonchalantly and casually executed on the helpless and weak. At the very least, the usage of brute power against the villagers was reckless, if not downright wrongful and illegal."
- Mahas, from Mesra.net
"Is the Mamali massacre another means of diverting the people's attention from the greatest day-light "robbery" in Malaysian history? Billions of public funds were lost and an honest man was murdered, yet the government was all hush-hush and lenient that the BMF matter is still an open affair with no end in sight."
- web aNtu
- DetikDaily
Okay, maybe that's enough. if you want more, just ask 'Uncle Google' and you'll find tons of them.
Let this video be the singing fat lady of the post:
